Winter Jasmine is one of the most beloved harbingers of spring in Ukrainian gardens. This delicate Chinese shrub has been cultivated for over three centuries and remains popular with gardeners for its remarkable ability to bloom during the darkest months of the year. Unlike its heat-loving relatives, Winter Jasmine has adapted perfectly to temperate climates and delights with golden flowers from February onwards, sometimes even emerging through snow.

The plant captivates not only for its blooming season but also for its simplicity and charm. Delicate yellow flowers open on still-bare, often black branches, creating a magical contrast that makes the shrub a true ornament during the sleeping period of the garden. Winter Jasmine is undemanding, thrives in any soil, and blends seamlessly into compositions with forsythia, dogwood, or weigela. Its flexible stems allow you to train it as a vertical accent against a wall or as a broader decorative bush in the centre of a border.

In the garden, Winter Jasmine serves as nature's own antidepressant: in cold February, its golden flowers symbolise the approach of spring and nature's awakening energy. In central, southern, and western regions of Ukraine, it thrives comfortably without requiring complex winter protection. Watering should be moderate, and the main task is removing one-third of flowered shoots after blooming to keep the shrub compact and full.

If you dream of a year-round flowering garden, start with Winter Jasmine. Its austere beauty and undemanding nature will make it a reliable helper for many years, whilst its early blooms will bring hope even during the coldest days.
