European Larch
Larch wood becomes harder than iron when submerged in water and does not rot for hundreds of years.

The European Larch is one of Europe's oldest cultivated conifers, accompanying humankind for millennia. Unlike most of its evergreen relatives, it is deciduous at heart: in autumn, the needles turn a magical golden hue before falling completely, leaving bare branches until spring. This characteristic is precisely what makes it uniquely captivating—it gifts the garden with seasonality and dynamism we associate with deciduous trees.
Visually, the larch presents as an elegantly refined tree with a pyramidal crown and soft, light-green foliage. Yet this delicate appearance is deceptive—it is a true survivor, capable of withstanding harsh conditions and strong winds. During spring months, when fresh needles emerge from the branches, the tree transforms into a genuine celebration of green. Several cultivated forms of European larch exist, but the classic wild-type form remains the most popular among gardeners for its natural beauty and reliability.
In the garden, the larch is remarkably versatile—from large parkland compositions to modest homestead plots. It sits beautifully alongside conventional garden plantings, particularly stunning against the dark green of spruces and pines, where its golden autumn stands out spectacularly. The plant demands virtually no attention once established, tolerates drought and diverse soils—exactly what any busy gardener needs.
But the greatest surprise awaits underwater: ancient Roman engineers understood the secret that larch wood in seawater becomes stronger than iron and resists decay for centuries. This very timber was used in building Venetian palaces and ports. For us, this means that planting this tree is an investment in a legacy that will outlast us all.
