Early Forsythia
Tolerates temperatures down to –29°C — the best forsythia for cold regions of Ukraine.

Early Forsythia is one of the most cold-hardy among its relatives, which is why gardeners in Ukraine's northern regions have embraced it so readily. This compact deciduous shrub, native to Korea and southern Manchuria, offers one of spring's earliest delights: in March and April, its shoots are adorned with cascades of golden flowers that seem to kindle a warm, living spark in the still-silvery garden. Unlike the more popular forsythia intermedia, this species is more compact and dense, maintaining its ornamental appeal throughout the season.
It forms a bush 1–2 metres tall with slender upright stems that remain nearly inconspicuous before flowering, then transform into veritable golden candles when the time comes. There are white-flowering forms, yet the classic yellow remains the favourite. Novice gardeners should note that Early Forsythia blooms on the previous year's wood, so pruning should be done immediately after flowering to avoid sacrificing next year's blooms.
This shrub is an ideal companion for hedgerows, mixed borders and spring compositions with lilac, dogwood and steppe almond. It is unpretentious in its demands: thriving in both sun and partial shade, content with ordinary garden soil and not requiring lavish watering. Early Forsythia is a quiet star of the early spring garden, hardy to –29 °C, bringing hope for warmth when waiting seems longest.
