Dahlia
Over 50,000 dahlia varieties have been developed

The hybrid dahlia is a true queen of the summer garden, delighting the eye with its exuberant blooms from July until the first frosts arrive. This plant originates from Mexico, where indigenous peoples treasured it for centuries not only for its beauty but also for its edible tubers. European breeders took an interest in it during the eighteenth century, and since then the dahlia has become one of the most variable garden plants — today there are over 50,000 varieties in an astonishing range of forms and colours.
The varietal diversity of dahlias is truly remarkable: from modest single-petalled flowers to luxurious fully double blooms the size of a ball; from dwarf miniatures to flowering giants as tall as a person. The colour palette encompasses every hue of the rainbow — from pure white and delicate pastels to vibrant oranges, deep burgundies, and even near-black tones. Such variety allows every gardener to find a dahlia to their taste, whether for cutting bouquets or for bedding displays.
Dahlias are favourites for creating bold compositions in the garden, especially in autumn when other flowers have faded. They look superb in vases, keep for several days in water, and make every arrangement memorable. Gardeners prize them for their long flowering season and undemanding nature, though for outstanding results it is worth giving them a little attention — staking the stems for support and removing excess flower buds at the right time.
A fascinating fact: dahlias made such an impression on Europeans in the eighteenth century that they were regarded as an unprecedented marvel. Today, this Mexican beauty has become one of the most popular cultivars in Ukraine — the tubers winter well with simple storage, so every spring one can joyfully grow a favourite colour again and again.
