Large-Flowered Tickseed
Tickseed is the official state flower of Florida (USA)

Large-Flowered Tickseed is one of the most beloved plants of American origin, capturing the hearts of gardeners worldwide. This perennial beauty arrived in European gardens as early as the eighteenth century, but gained true recognition only in the twentieth when plant breeders developed a range of wonderful varieties. Native to the southern and central regions of the United States, where it grows in natural prairies and open woodlands, it thrives in sunny locations and fears neither heat nor drought.
The leafy, feathery plant with its thread-like foliage is smothered in golden flowers measuring 3–4 cm throughout summer. There are pure yellow forms as well as varieties with bi-coloured blooms—featuring red or bronze streaks towards the centre. The neat growth habit makes Coreopsis suitable for both formal flower beds and naturalistic plantings alongside ornamental grasses and companion plants. Popular varieties such as 'Early Sunrise' or 'Sunburst' flower continuously from June to September if spent blooms are regularly removed.
In the garden, Large-Flowered Tickseed is remarkably versatile. It shines in low-maintenance borders, makes excellent cut flowers, and attracts butterflies and bees. In southern Ukraine it flowers especially abundantly, whilst in the north it proves equally reliable, overwintering without protection even after harsh frosts. There are no secrets to its care—plant it, water sparingly, and it will reward you for years. It is hardly surprising that in the United States, Coreopsis grandiflora is recognised as the official state flower of Florida!
