The Japanese Cherry, known worldwide as sakura, is one of the most enchanting spring adornments a gardener can cultivate. This tree or large shrub originates from Japan, where it has been cherished for over a thousand years, and remains a universal symbol of spring and renewal. In Ukraine, sakura has only recently gained popularity, yet it has swiftly captured gardeners' hearts through its unforgettable beauty and undemanding nature.

April and May transform into something magical when dense clusters of pink and white blossoms unfurl along the branches, blanketing them like clouds and creating a truly fairytale landscape. Numerous cultivars exist—from the delicate pink 'Kanzan' to the fully double 'Amanogawa' with its pyramidal form. Each variety possesses its own character: some flower more abundantly, others retain their blooms longer, yet all are equally exquisite.

In the garden, sakura sits comfortably alongside magnolia, rhododendron, and Japanese maple, creating memorable compositions. The tree is quite undemanding and suits gardens of any size—it simply requires a sunny spot and loamy soil. The key is to allow it time to establish itself and avoid excessive pruning, as cherry trees tolerate heavy intervention poorly. Minimal removal of dead wood maintains health without compromising the graceful form.

In Japan, there is even a cherished tradition celebrating sakura's bloom—O Hanami. This speaks to how sacred this plant remains in Japanese culture. Should you be fortunate enough to cultivate these legend-wrapped blossoms in your own garden for but a few precious days each spring, this tree will undoubtedly become your favourite for years to come.
