Isabella Grape
Isabella was among the first mass-cultivated American grape varieties introduced to Ukraine in the 19th century.

Isabella Grape is one of the most beloved grapes among Ukrainian gardeners, particularly those who value reliability and low maintenance. This hybrid of American and European vine species arrived on our lands back in the 19th century, and has steadily conquered the hearts of gardeners ever since. Unlike temperamental cultivated varieties, Isabella grows in almost any conditions, demanding no exhausting care, yet still delivers generous harvests year after year.
The vine develops into a vigorous climber that can extend several metres in a single season, making it ideal for planting near walls, arbours, or pergolas where it can fully express its potential. Delicate flowers appear on one- and two-year-old shoots in May, and by late August or September, wonderful blue-black berries ripen with a delicate strawberry fragrance. Dense bunches remain beautiful on the vine right through the frosts, creating a truly striking natural display in the garden.
In the garden, Isabella proves to be a remarkably versatile companion. Train it up a fence to shade a veranda, plant it near a gazebo, or use it as a living screen from neighbouring views. Its indifference to soil type is another significant advantage—it roots almost everywhere except in waterlogged low-lying areas. It pairs beautifully with other grape varieties, particularly Lydia and wine-making cultivars, creating striking garden compositions.
If you are just beginning your journey into grape growing and wish to taste your first success—Isabella will be your best helper. It forgives beginner's mistakes, rewards you with fruit in the first or second year, and its berries offer not only fresh snacks for the family but also excellent material for compotes and jam. In its natural state, climbing trees and reaching skyward, this vigorous vine reveals its true nature—powerful, wild, and capable of bringing joy with scarcely any human intervention.
