Garden Chrysanthemum
In Japan, the chrysanthemum is a symbol of the imperial family.

The florist's chrysanthemum is one of the most beloved flowers among Ukrainian gardeners, particularly when summer yields its colours to autumn's palette. Originating from China, where it has been cultivated for over two thousand years, this plant truly deserves its place in every garden. It blooms precisely when most other flowers are finishing their season, offering us bouquets of golden, snow-white, deep burgundy and delicate pink flowers from August through the first frost.
The chrysanthemum is a remarkably versatile plant. Varieties differ not only in colour but also in flower form: pompous 'button' blooms, delicate daisy-like chrysanthemums, full double varieties and even the less familiar 'spider' forms with long slender petals. From compact bushes merely 30 centimetres tall to sprawling specimens exceeding one metre — there is a variety for every garden corner. It thrives in sunny locations receiving at least half a day of sunlight and is undemanding about soil, making it accessible even to novice gardeners.
In garden design, the chrysanthemum is a true queen of autumn. It is planted in groups to create vibrant flower beds, positioned in mixed borders where it sustains decorative interest through late autumn, and even cultivated in containers to adorn terraces and balconies. Many gardeners prize this plant precisely because it adds colour during the dreariest period of the year — September and October.
Interestingly, the chrysanthemum is actually perennial, though in most Eastern European gardens it is often grown as an annual or biennial. The key to success lies in pinching young shoots in June and July, which encourages branching and abundant flowering. If you seek an autumn garden bursting with colour when other plants are already dormant, the chrysanthemum is exactly what you need.
